We’re excited to kick things off by pulling back the curtain on the behind-the-scenes efforts that keep our local shooting range safe, functional, and ready for enthusiasts like you. As volunteers dedicated to promoting firearms safety and education, the Range Safety Officers (RSOs) play a crucial role in maintaining the facility. Today, we’re spotlighting a recent gathering that highlights just how much work goes into keeping everything in top shape.
Last week, a team of our dedicated RSO volunteers met up at the Orange Beach Shooting Range for a hands-on maintenance session. One of the key tasks was replacing the backdrops for the targets. These backdrops consist of sturdy plywood backers that serve as the foundation for stapling paper targets securely in place. Over time, with constant use from shooters practicing their aim, these backers wear down from bullet impacts, weather exposure, and general wear and tear. To ensure safety and accuracy, we replace them twice a year—once in the spring and again in the fall. This regular upkeep prevents hazards like splintered wood or unstable surfaces, making sure every visit to the range is as safe as possible.
But the work didn’t stop there. The team also tackled the free-standing targets, which are essential for dynamic training scenarios. These portable setups allow shooters to practice in various positions without relying solely on fixed stations. Unfortunately, wear and tear takes its toll on them too, so the volunteers rolled up their sleeves and built eight brand-new ones from scratch using high-quality wood. It was a collaborative effort—measuring, cutting, assembling, and reinforcing each target to withstand heavy use. By the end of the day, the range was refreshed with these new additions, ready to support everything from beginner marksmanship to advanced drills.
